Refugee Sponsorship Update

To all those who came out to the Refugee Information Luncheon on Sunday, April 3rd. The youth of our parish helped us with the presentations, set up and clean up which made light work for all. We welcomed over 45 people many of whom have signed up to volunteer on the following six committees: Health and Medical, Settlement/ Outreach, Education and Learning, Job Search/ Employment, Housing and Furniture and Household. We are grateful for everyone’s interest, participation, and enthusiasm to prepare for and welcome our refugee families. We know that some parishioners weren’t able to join us but wish to participate. Please contact us for any details you may need.

IMMIGRATION PROCESSING DELAYS: The news about refugee application processing times for private groups and blended programs seems to change weekly. Our understanding of the situation is that the processing could take up to 12 months. However, very recently, the government announced that they will be sending more employees to the Middle East to speed up processing times. Still, we have no concrete information about how long the applications for our families will take to process. It will probably be a few more months before we get a date of arrival.

This is longer than we were originally told and is very discouraging for the refugee families and the Parish. Please be patient. I think for now, we have to say that we will not be collecting furniture, nor securing apartments until we know further details. Our parish is a generous one and we know you are keen to donate many items. We ask that you please hold on to them as long as you can. We will update you as we know more and let you know what is needed as well as when and how we can receive your generous donations. Thank you for your patience as we work through these delays.

In Gratitude and Hope,

The Refugee Sponsorship Committee
